Our Story

The Story Behind Apavo

Apavo is rooted in pavo, the Latin word for peacock and the name of a constellation in the southern sky. The name was chosen with intention. When our founder set out to name the firm, she knew it had to mean something significant.

Our Origins

A Name Rooted in Vigilance

Always drawn to the stars and astronomy, she looked to the sky for inspiration. Through that research, she discovered the constellations mapped by Dutch navigators in the late 16th century, who charted unknown skies as they sailed to the East Indies. Among the twelve southern constellations they identified was Pavo, the peacock, placed permanently in the night sky alongside Grus, Phoenix, and Tucana, a group collectively known as the Southern Birds. Its brightest star, Alpha Pavonis, was later named Peacock by the Royal Air Force’s navigational almanac in the 1930s, chosen to guide pilots through uncertain skies. It still does.

The peacock itself carries ancient symbolism. In Greek mythology, it was the sacred bird of Hera, queen of the gods, sovereign of the heavens, and a figure defined by authority and watchfulness. When Hera needed something guarded, she turned to Argus Panoptes, a giant with a hundred eyes. His name, Panoptes, means “all-seeing”. Only a few of his eyes rested at any given time, making it nearly impossible to deceive him. When Argus fell, Hera honored his vigilance by placing his hundred eyes into the tail feathers of her peacock, which is why, to this day, the peacock’s plumage appears to look back at you.

The result was a creature of extraordinary awareness: beauty paired with the capacity to see in every direction at once.

That felt right for what she was building.

Our Approach

Built for Complex Environments

Federal cybersecurity demands exactly that kind of presence. The environments we work in are complex, the missions are real, and the agencies we serve don’t have room for partners who show up halfway. Like Argus, we operate with constant vigilance, tracking risk, monitoring compliance, and staying alert to what others might miss. Like Hera’s peacock, we show up with confidence and intention, never mistaking visibility for vanity. And like the navigators who first mapped Pavo in unfamiliar skies, we are most at home where the terrain is complex and the path isn’t always clear. We don’t wait for a playbook. We build one. Every engagement brings its own set of unknowns, and Apavo was built for exactly that: to move with confidence through environments others find difficult to navigate, chart a clear course forward, and leave our clients better positioned than we found them.

The A at the front is simple. It’s ours. It makes the name our own and gives it a forward momentum that fits who we are: a firm that leads, not follows.

We chose the name intentionally. We run the firm the same way.
